Women for Science Program Overview
The Women for Science Initiative is a forum of women scientists, trustees, corporators, and friends of Boston Biomedical Research Institute (BBRI) committed to raising awareness in the community about scientific research.
The Women for Science Initiative was created in the Fall of 2006 by Trustee, Allie Flather Blodgett and Corporator, Kate Sides Flather with an event called "West Cedar Street Series." The goal was to have an all-women audience learn about and discuss cutting-edge research being conducted at BBRI and around the world. Scientists from BBRI present recent work, guide the discussion, and answer questions. Over the last four years this forum has been a wonderful opportunity to engage women of different backgrounds and professions to learn about research that might one day save their lives or the life of someone they love.
There is a particularly strong interest in disease areas that affect women and the ways in which woman can collectively advocate for scientific research, and thus accelerate discovery of potential therapies for these devastating diseases. Using this format, women can learn about, become engaged in, and support breakthroughs in scientific research in areas such as heart disease, breast and lung cancer, Alzheimer's disease, infertility, and muscular dystrophy to name a few. Boston Biomedical's unique environment encourages an interdisciplinary, collaborative and innovative atmosphere making the experience for the women for science an enriching opportunity.
